Tuesday, March 09, 2004 Hi Everyone, Another hot week of Cod fishing here in Montauk. We sailed open boat on Thursday after passing up what turned out to be fishable days on Tues and Wed. Weather was fantastic and the bite was on! We caught over 100 Cod with 65 keepers on Diamond Jig/Jelly Worm combos and Skimmer Clams. Tim Scott had the pool fish and Walter was high hook with 14 keepers. The boys also connected for 2 bushel of ling. Fridays trip was open boat again. The bite started out more slowly than had been the norm, but we persisted and finally found the mother lode! Non stop is inadequate to describe the fishing today. We anchored and chummed once we located the school and double headers were the norm, not the exception. We tallied a full boat limit of keepers, with 80 fish to 12 lbs, as well as countless ling. Truly unbelievable. Saturday was a blowout, but we returned Sunday, sailing a bit later to allow the sea to settle a bit after the blow. Turned out to be a beautiful day for George Steininger, who made the trip for the second time this week for a repeat performance of 50 keeper cod and numerous ling. Monday, March 01, 2004 We left a bit earlier to catch more of the early bite and were rewarded handsomely. We sailed at 4 am and were back to the same spot before first light. We found the area lit up with herring and codfish intent on committing suicide. Over 100 fish were landed for the George Steininger group from the Hudson Anglers. Several fish in the 20s were taken and Marty Stein had the pool fish with an estimated 25 pounder caught on a fresh skimmer clam. With the amount of bait we have been marking in the area it looks like we may have a great spring run. Saturday, February 28, 2004 We sailed our first charter with the Joe Matzinger group and found some great fishing 12 miles SE of Block Island in 140 feet of water. Conditions were ideal for drifting so we wailed the fish on diamond jigs tipped with tubes and jelly worms. The early bite was non-stop with 4-5 fish on at times. Later in the day we tried some anchor fishing and caught a few cod on bait as well as a bushel of fat ling to 5 lbs. The boys totaled about 60 cod for the day and went home with a lot of fillets. Wednesday, January 28, 2004 Three days of exceptional early January Block Island Blackfishing ended my Montauk charter season with a bang. The weather was changing and near zero degree temperatures were in the forecast. On January 6th I got a call from Captains Paul and Rich with invitation to fish on the Viking Starship. A no-brainer. I loaded my camper on my pickup and 25 hours later was enjoying 70 degree temperatures and sun in Tarpon Springs, Florida. That night at 8 pm we set sail for Middle Grounds , a rocky fish rich area 80 miles west into The Gulf of Mexico. At 1:30 a.m. Captain Paul signaled us to drop in and immediately rods were bending. This rod bending problem continued for the next 32 hours as literally thousands of fish came over the rails of the Starship. Black , Red, and Scamp Grouper, Mangrove and Vermillion Snapper, Pink, Jolthead and Margate Porgys, Amberjack, Kingfish, Cobia and all kinds of other colorful reef fish were in the catch. The bite was on both day and night and everyone was arm weary after the trip including yours truly. I was truly impressed with the fishing and am looking forward to the next six trips until I go back North to chase Cod Fish in late February. If you want to escape the cold and get in some exceptional fishing, I highly recommend this trip. Saturday, January 03, 2004 Open Boat Really finishing up with a bang! These are both great trips to get in after work or a day at the beach. Thursday, March 13, 2003 The weather finally allowed us to get out Saturday, March 1. We had a great day fishing with a total catch of 70 cod. 5 fish weighed in between 22 and 31 lbs and there were many in the 8-15 lb. range. The guys doing all the catching were Captain Gary Hocking from the Klondike IX, Captain Gary Hocking from the charter boat Deborah Ann II, and their friends Manny Laporte, Henry Rhett and Jack Gollotta. We also brought in 15 ling and 3 small pollack. Water temps of 150 feet with temps of 39 degrees 5 miles west of Coxes Ledge showed an abundance of life- and in addition to our days catch we threw back alot of small cod. Inshore Block water temps were too cold at 37 degrees and yielded not a bite. "All we need is some good weather to go fishing" says Captain Mark who remains optimistic that with the current water temps the cod bite could continue thru mid- April. Made it out Wednesday, March 4 on open boat trip. We had 18 keeper cod up to 12 lbs with 20 throw back cod and one 5 lb pollack as well as a dozen ling. Bill Grond was high hook with 5 keeper cod. Saturday, March 7ths charter scored 28 keeper cod with 5 fish in the 22 to 32 1/2 lb range for George Steininger, Marty Stern, Doug Hall, Bob Harvey, John Holmes and Charlie Weber. We had 12 throw back cod and a dozen big ling as well. The 32 1/2 lb fish was part of a double header caught by Charlie Weber. We have been fishing 5 miles west of coxes ledge; on anchor; chumming with whole cracked skimmer clams and using skimmers for bait as well. Water temps at a chilly 38 degrees. Capt. Mark will continue to sail open boat weekdays when the weather allows. Call for info and to get on open boat list 631 668 6773. Monday, July 15, 2002 Fishing Report Week of 7/7/02 -7/14/02 Bass fishing was good this week with fish caught mostly jigging parachutes at the Flats, North Rip and the Slot. Most charter groups caught their limit with some fish in the high 30 lb mark being landed. Fluke fishing remained excellent on the back side with many fish between 4 to 8 lbs landed this week. Inner Frisbees and the new Grounds were the hot spots. Sharking remains slow but on Sunday, 7/14 we landed 2 blue sharks around 125 lbs each, and caught and released 2 80 lb makos. School bluefin tuna weighing about 20 to 30 lbs are showing up and the canyon is beginning to come alive with more and more reports of yellowfins being landed. Look for increased reports of albacore and yellow fin tuna on the edge and bigeye tuna landings in late july. Bass are starting to respond to bunker chunking which will please anglers who like to catch them via this method. Eeling at night has produced some nice fish this week but better catches will be made with the full moon approaching. Sea bass and porgies are plentiful and can be mixed in on our full day inshore trips for anglers who like them. Capt Mark still has some available charter dates open. Call now to reserve and get in on the action. Monday, May 06, 2002 On Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, fluking on Montauk's backside was good, producing fish to 7 1/2 lbs. On Sunday's fluke trip, the Mike Maroe party landed 16 fluke- 10 between 4 1/2 and 7 1/2 lbs. On Monday, May 6 Frank Koch and friends caught 65 snowshoe flounder up to 41/2 lbs. off Block Island. Bluefish are abundant and Striped Bass are everywhere -- all signs pointing towards the seasons opener on May 8th being a good one.
